Lupe Fiasco Explains Why He's a Better Lyricist Than Kendrick Lamar (link in comments)
Lupe Fiasco is a fan of Kendrick Lamar, but that doesn’t mean he thinks the Compton rapper is above criticism or competition. In response to a recent tweet comparing the two artists' lyricism, Lupe summarily declared himself the better lyricist. This prompted a “lol” response from TDE’s Punch, and ended with Lupe further explaining his thoughts on the situation.
In a now-deleted series of follow-up tweet, he explained that he likes Kendrick and thinks he’s a better artist as a whole, but when it comes to lyricism there are better rappers:
In my own words…once again for you b-tches…I love me some KDot…always have always will. With that said do think I he’s a good lyricist? Yes. Do I think he’s the best lyricist? No. Do I think it’s lyricists that are better than him? Yes. Is he a better artist than me? Yes. Is he a better lyricist than me? No. Does he make better songs than me? Yes. Did I think control was ridicule? No. Am I jealous of Kdot? No. Did I personally give him his props in chicago on stage as the next nigga to take the crown? YES. Is It on camera? Yes. Did I mean it? Yes. Does my opinion matter? Obviously. Does your opinion matter? Yes. Does your opinion matter to me? No. Are we both legends? Yes. Are we both successful? Yes. Is it a bunch of unsuccessful n-ggaz that keep pushing this? Yes.
He concluded by shouting out the label as well as Kendrick’s independent debut album. “Section.80 is my fave. TDE is my favorite rap label,” he wrote.
This isn’t Lupe Fiasco’s first brush with Kendrick. Way back in 2014, he claimed that rappers like King Los, Logic, and Cassidy were better rappers than Kendrick. In 2018, he said that he didn’t consider Kendrick a “top tier lyricist” and called the Compton rapper’s much-discussed “Control” verse “wack” and “super over hyped.” He later walked back some of those statements, but it’s clear there’s still a sense of healthy competition there.
