How do you count of your bars, space before 1 or space after four?

So as a rapper if I'm doing an 8 count I would go 1 an 2 an 3 an 4 an so therefore I visualise a bar as 1______ 2______ 3______ 4______ . Or you can switch it around and went An 1 An 2 An 3 An 4 (_____1_____2_____3_____4) then the bar would end on the fourth beat / 2nd snare. I'd been told by a buddy who'd been rapping for a couple years now that the initial way, in which there's space after four and not before one, was how everyone writes however recently when trying to break down other ppl's rap bars I've realised it might be better to switch over to the (an 1 an 2) instead of (1 an 2 an) method.

Why?

Because it lines up with the bars better.

________1 __________ 2 an 3 an 4

I sit Back with this PACK of zig Zags and this BAG

of this Weed it gives ME the shit Needed to BE

Instead of my current method being:

1______________2_____________ 3 ___________ 4 ___________

I sit

Back with this PACK of zig - ZAGS and this BAG of this

Weed it gives ME the shit Needed to BE

I understand that technically you can do either and vary it up song to song but for sakes of simplicity I want to stick to one and use that consistently. So my question is what are the downsides/upsides to changing to an 1 an 2 an 3 an 4 rather than 1 an 2 an 3 an 4 an?

Thanks in advance
